Do space battle graphics reflect battle damage results?

Do the space battle graphics reflect whats happening in the actual battle, before a ship actually explodes?  If my dreadnaughts massive blaster beams blow through the targets paper shields, does that look any different than my glorified space shuttle with a laser tickling a dreadnoughts godlike shields? If i watch 2 ships battling can I tell from the graphics which ship is winning before the loser explodes?  I like the graphics to tell me how my ships are performing.

I don't own GalCiv 3 yet.  In GalCiv2 the graphics told nothing about how my ships were performing until they exploded.  A pnball machines bells and lights were a better  display about what was actually happening.  IMO GalCiv2 was a wonderful game except for that.
