Mixing and matching the 3 weapon/shield types

Would it be a good/bad idea to, for example, build a ship with Beam Weapons and Armour?

Or Missiles and Mass Drivers, but only Shields?

In effect, I'm wondering what the plusses and minuses are of mixing up your weapons and defences.
