1) ABOUT

After playing weeks of GalCiv3 I came to feel that space was... boring. Exploring stars felt unrewarding as there were rarely any usable planets, even on abundant. It just felt too empty. So, I dove into the xml files and through trial and error, made this mod! It makes stars rarer, but massively spikes the planet/asteroid count, and gives personality to different types of stars. Planetary tile bonuses are also made more common.

2) CONTENTS

This mod changes 3 files, and includes backups to make install easy. I have documented changes at the beginning of each file to simplify manually merging, and to give some guidance.

The changes are:
[v0.1]

  • Star systems with personality! Planets can appear much father from stars and most systems have an Ourt belt of asteroids.
    • YELLOW STAR 1. Good chance of habitable planets, lots of asteroids. 6 Lanes
    • YELLOW STAR 2. Good chance of habitable planets, some asteroids. 5 Lanes
    • PURPLE STAR. Not many planets but most are habitable due to large temperate zone. No asteroids. 4 Lanes
    • WHITE STAR 1. SMALL HOT YOUNG. A small, hot, young star with some habitable planets. Many asteroids as it has just formed. 5 Lanes
    • WHITE STAR 2. SMALL HOT OLD. A small, hot, old star with some habitable planets. Few asteroids. 4 Lanes
    • BLUE STAR 1. SMALL HOT YOUNG. A small, hot, young star with some planets. Many asteroids as it has just formed. 4 Lanes
    • BLUE STAR 2. SMALL HOT OLD. A small, hot, old star with some planets. Few asteroids. 4 Lanes
    • RED GIANT 1. LARGE OLD. A large, old star with many planets. Most asteroids gone with time. 6 Lanes
    • RED GIANT 2. LARGE. A large star with many planets. Some asteroids. 6 Lanes
    • ORANGE 1. Small, cool.    A small, cool star with an almost empty system. 4 Lanes
    • ORANGE 2. Medium, cool. A medium, cool star with a small system. 4 Lanes
    • ORANGE 3. Large. A large star with a small system. 4 Lanes
  • Star numbers drastically reduced on lower settings
  • Habitable planet number increased on higher settings
  • Slight increase in special tiles on planets.

2) INSTALLING

  1.  Find your GalCiv3 data\Game folder, usually located at
    • Code: xml
      1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Galactic Civilizations III\data\Game
  2. Copy the contents of the zip file in, overwriting when given the option. You should be asked to overwrite 3 files. Don't worry, I included a backup of each vanilla file in the zip.
  3. Start a new game. The mod won't take effect on pre-existing saves as it is used to generate the map prior to the first turn.
    • I recommend playing with stars set to uncommon or rare, and both planet settings set to abundant.
  4. Have fun! And be sure to leave me feedback on to forum!~

3) UNINSTALLING

  1. Go to your data\Game folder as listed in install instructions
  2. Delete GalCiv3GlobalDefs.xml, MapSetupDefs.xml, and StarSystemDefs.xml
  3. Finally, restore the vanilla files by removing " [0.50]backup" from their names, leaving them as xml files.

This information is also included in the zip file.
